HYPE

Cross Chess Workshop 

Tuesday September 10, 17, 24   4:00-6:00 p.m.  

Have a love for chess? Have you ever heard of "Cross Chess"? Well come and join in on the fun of this 12 week workshop. Learn the rules to this fun new style of chess as well as the traditional style of the game.     Open to teens  13-18 with a HYPE card.                          

 

Bead Workshop              

Saturday September 14,21   4:00-5:45 p.m.          

Love earrings, necklaces, how about bracelets? Well join in our two week workshop, and learn how to create your own. Registration is required for this workshop.  Open to teens 13-18 with a HYPE card.           

 

Magic, Magic and More Magic  
Friday    September 27   3:30-4:30 p.m.  

Hocus, pocus, come join us as we focus on the magic of Ming the Magnificent. Enjoy a show packed with magic, magic and more magic All ages welcome!!!                                              

 

Matrix Theater  Presents "Unlucky Anniversary"            

Saturday September 28        3:00-5:00 p.m.  

Matrix Theatre Company's 11-14 year-old summer camp would like to dedicate this original production of 'Unlucky Anniversary' to the Conely Branch Library. We are excited to celebrate Conely's 100th anniversary together. 'Unlucky Anniversary' is a suspenseful murder mystery that will make you laugh and is fun for the whole family!  Bike Tech           

Tuesday  September10, 17, 24   6:00-7:45 p.m.  

Learn how to repair and maintain bicycles with an expert bike instructor from The Hub of Detroit's Back Alley Bikes program. Use our test bike,  or bring your own bicycle in to work on. Learn the history of bicycles  and the rules on bicycling.                                               

 

Video Game Programming         

Wednesday  September 11, 18, 25    4:00-6:00 p.m.  

Don't just play video games, create your own! Set up and run a Minecraft server on a Raspberry Pi Linus microcomputer.Then explore hacking the Microsoft Kinect controller on an iMac to make your own custom motion controlled video games.                           

3-D Printing       

Wednesday  September 11, 18, 25     6:00-7:45 p.m.  

The future is here! Print 3D objects of plastic using our Makerbot  Replicator 2 3D printer. Learn how to download pre-made 3D models from the internet, and to make your very own 3D models using computer software including TinkerCAD.

Let’s get crafty! Work on papercraft, knitting, cross-stitch, and more!  No experience necessary, make great gifts for friends and family, or maybe even start your own crafting business. Find new ideas on Pinterest and come in with even more projects we can work on!                                           

 

Printmaking      

Friday    September 13, 20 4:00-5:45 p.m.              

Printmaking workshops based in the paper arts. Covering the fundamentals of monoprinting as well as relief printmaking with linoleum and woodblock. Several different ways to hand-bind books and journals will also be taught, and combined with the printmaking and letterpress printing.

Sewing and Wearable’s

Saturday  September 14, 21, 28 12:00-2:00 p.m.  

Work that fashion! Learn how to make your own clothing visions become a reality. Design clothes and accessories you want, and then make them with our collection of sewing machines. Basic sewing skills taught for those who aren’t familiar in the use of sewing machines.                                             

 Arduino Robotics            

Saturday September 14, 21, 28  2:00-4:00 p.m.   Build your own robot army! Learn the basics of electronic circuits, then build and program your own robot. We use the open source Arduino micro-controller, which has a ton of free resources and tutorials available online. 

 

*All MakerSpace activities are open to teens 13-18 with a HYPE card.

Summer Reading Program
Wednesday, June 26-August 14, 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Join in as we go “Beneath the Surface” to “dig into” English, writing and speech skills through poetry, audio production and performance. This eight week program will conclude with a finale that will feature a poetry slam for prizes. (Kick-off/orientation is Wednesday, June 26 at 6:00 p.m.)


Summer Reader’s Theater
Thursday, June 27-August 8, 4:00-5:30 p.m.
 Calling all teens with a flair for the stage. Come and be a part of this six week workshop as we rehearse
and get ready to perform Shel Silverstein’s “Uncle Shelby’s Poetry Circus. A collection of the poetry of the immortal poet, author, singer songwriter, cartoonist, and screenwriter.

Hello!!!!!

Hello everyone, especially the teens of the HYPE Center. My name is Barbara Parker and I am the new Teen Specialist for this department. I can't begin to tell everyone how happy I am to be here working with the teens at the Detroit Public Library. I know that many of you are anxious to get more involved in what is going on in HYPE, and that is what I am here to do. Please come in and let me know what you want ,for this is your place to be. Join the Teen Advisory Board so that we can bring your wishes and desires into reality. I look forward to getting to know each and everyone of you, and to keep moving HYPE ahead.
